ABOUT
Cecilia Tanure is a Brazilian artisan based in Los Angeles, specializing in hand-made functional ceramics that also serve as extraordinary art objects. Working with organic materials fired multiple times at temperatures as high as 2500°F, the clay is left covered in thick, gooey textures that simultaneously evoke macrocosmic and microcosmic landscapes. Each piece is composed of perfect imperfections with the presence of the artisan’s hands and humor – no two pieces are ever the same. Cecilia’s approach to crafting requires time, intuition, a love for color and an expertise borne of experimentation and rule-breaking, such that the resulting vessels are truly unique.
Cecilia started working with clay as a hobby in 2016 and in the following years has perfected her craft by incessant work as well as classes at UCLA, Andersen Ranch in Colorado and with potters in Oaxaca, Ibiza, São Paulo, Paris and Los Angeles. As of 2024 Cecilia's work can be found at Los Angeles’ avant-garde concept store Just One Eye.
In parallel to developing her art practice, Cecilia established two businesses also in 2016: VIVA Projects in São Paulo, an agency for special contemporary art ventures and in Los Angeles, a company specializing in Brazilian mid-century modern design. Previously, after graduating with a design degree from Central Saint Martins in London in 2009 Cecilia worked in art world until 2015 at the prestigious Gagosian Gallery, Sotheby's auction house and as a director at Mendes Wood DM in São Paulo.
